Review: Internet Tool for Math “MathGames.com”

My son is almost 9 years old. He is a new reader.  He loves math but it has to be practical to interest him: okay, practical to an 8-year-old boy.  

He runs around throwing footballs to himself, keeping an imaginary score.  We hear “21 Gators to 6 Bulldogs, oh, and they miss  the extra point!” and other such.  Basketball.  Baseball.  Scores.  Stats.  Boy stuff.  He also helps cook and loves to find fractions in the kitchen.  Money math is easy for him and he likes to make change.

However: getting the simplest of graphite scratches in the actual math textbook might as well be mission impossible 11!  The textbook and Lucas repel each other.  

Video games?  Ever hear of Star Ocean on PS1? I call it reading practice.  It’s like Zork with graphics… but you do have to read to know what the next move needs to be! That and the “secret” Minecraft books that look like user guides have encouraged him to read.

I had an “ah-ha” moment because he had run to the bathroom at gym and there’s my computer sitting there next to the poor copy of “Arithmetic 2” that someone may mistake for a cleaning rag. I remembered that the girls had a math game they loved called “Math King” on the long-ago tablet.  

I searched Math King – the results were not what I wanted; nope.  

I found “mathgames.com” and after our few weeks of use, I’ve decided to share this amazing find!  

Math Games is an online learning tool that has a free version.  There is a “subscribe” option that allows you access to the premium games and such, but what I want is included in the free version.

At the main screen, you see a bunch of actual games with math problems added in. I use those as rewards: Lucas can play one after getting so many stars (details below). For the actual work, you can choose “skills by standard, “skills by grade” or “skills by category” from the menu that reads “practice skills” (upper left corner).  Or scroll down until you see the “practice math by grade” and “practice math by category” option menus – they will show you PreK to Grade 8 & concepts from counting and number properties to equations and ratios. Select one.

Each section starts with a first lesson. Each set is broken up into 10 questions. Each question has videos with teachers explaining the concept.  (The video button is in the upper right corner on each screen with the green “sound” button and the “scratch pad” button.) There is also a green “sound” button reads the problem and the answers while highlighting each one.  Lucas is using this feature to help with reading practice.  (I LOVE this feature!) As the user answers, a green check mark pops up for a correct answer or a yellow exclamation point for an incorrect. An incorrect response also makes the corresponding video lecture pop up on the left of the screen. The user earns stars by completing the concept; more correct answers = more stars. After each concept set, the program will suggest moving on or repeating said concept set (depending on the percentage of incorrect answers).

Lucas started with “fractions.” Each time he finished one segment with a 9 or 10 score (out of 10 questions) it suggested the next concept.  This continued for almost four solid hours!  He moved through fractions, decimals, money, “dice” (what he called the concept of “stats”), and anything else that had “grade 2” or “grade 3” to start with.  We’ve been using this new tool for a few weeks whenever we are at gym and he chooses to consider the textbook an enemy.  

I realized over the course of Lucas’ discovery into this tool that Lucas has an innate understanding of variables in equations.  Everything math seems to make sense to him in strange ways.  He would reread the equation with “red bicycles” or “Georgia’s score” or “nickels” in the place of the variable.

Jillian (new algebra student currently using “Algebra 1” by A Beka Book) enjoyed working in the “equations” and “geometry” section.  The website breaks each concept down into easily digestible bits.  The accompanying videos are in the fashion of “teaching textbooks” explanations, actually solving various problems similar to those in the concept.  

Even Kimberly (dual-enrollment college student) sat down to try it. She liked the way it moved through the questions and concepts visually. She asked if there was one for biology (the class she’s taking her final in this week).

The Joy of Building

When I was a child, legos were my thing.  I was very proud of the fact that I could build anything, especially when the box had a suggested age far above mine. 

Pre-teen to teenager: it was the Sauder stuff, you know, that really cheap particle board furniture you bought at Wal-Mart and it might last through one move if it wasn’t damp.  I had a coffee tin full of spare Sauder pieces because the same locks, nuts, screws, and bolts were used in all kinds of furniture.  I was so confident in my wood-building ability that I charged people to put their Sauder stuff together.  Basically, if it had instructions, I was on it.  (Even mistranslated instructions, because I had intuition!)

Wednesday, the plan was to get off before 2pm.  The kiddos and I were supposed to have an afternoon with my sister and niece.  Her internet guy stole the late afternoon (you know, “I’ll be here between 2pm and 5pm”).  I went home.  Laud, Lucas, and I pull up to… wait, I thought Louis was bummed out because they canceled his order?

This crate, just a little too heavy for Lucas and I to team lift into the garage, was sitting outside the garage.  “Stump Grinder” was stamped on the thin plyboard it was packed in. 

I couldn’t wait for Laud to load up and get full!  I haven’t gotten to build anything solid since the Guinea Pig cages!  (The silly three-chicken-run was made of scraps and hurried; not something I was proud of and definitely not solid.)  

Bingo!  Laud is out and building is on!  It came with almost all the tools needed (sweet!  13, 15, 17, and 19 mm wrenches! – yes I’m nerdy enough to love tools.)  I love spare 9mm and 13mm wrenches because they are the most commonly lost in my toolbox. 

Lots of parts and bolts with locknuts later, I’ve almost finished with the star performer for Saturday and Sunday’s adventures!  I enjoy the thrill of completing something practical.  I can’t wait to build the giant bird aviary for Becky’s parakeets, our guinea pigs, and baby chicks.  I am super excited about the prospect of building!  I laughed at my own thoughts while I was building the machine because I actually like the smell of the bolts – weird, right?

I handed the user’s manual and engine manual to Louis – “tada!  The machine is all yours.”

Now onto Saturday!

One of the advantages to homeschooling is being able to pick curricula.  Most of us would agree that our children can recite movie lines – sometimes even if they’ve just seen the movie twice. 

We used BBC Nature with David Attenborough for science for as long as we had access to it.  It showed nature in its entire splendor.  Of course, as with Carl Sagan’s Cosmos Series, we had to reflect on their errors in timeline and regarding the theory of macro-evolution.  We would say things like, “look at how amazing God’s creation is!” and as they got older, invite them to ask and investigate the question, “why do these scientists believe in millions of years instead of thousands?”   

In depth studies of animal adaptations and human interference in our food (animal and plant husbandry) have led to the understanding that “kinds” of animals adapt by losing a recessive trait rather than by adding a completely new trait.  This led to my kids saying “oh yes, I believe evolution happens, do you understand the true meaning of the word evolution?” (Spoiler: it simply means change) But have you ever been able to add anything to a creature or plant?  We have bred plants, raised animals (Becky bred chickens to get specific traits or colors), watched and observed the genetic traits pass in Guinea Pigs, chickens, and parakeets.  

Imagine their surprise and excitement when we discovered a video series that discussed the same adaptation and genetic issues they had seen in life!

We discovered The Ark Encounter website along with Creation Museum and their affiliated YouTube channel called “Answers In Genesis!”  Wow!  They are not afraid to take on difficult subjects and ask and investigate so many fascinating things about our biology, animal adaptation, DNA structures, explanations of the how and why behind so many scientific theories.  It is a wealth of information. 

The first single episode we watched (it was almost an hour long) on dinosaurs in the Bible had my youngest five captivated the entire time.  Even Theadora, who interprets every video in terms of “Paw Patrol” at the moment, sat on the couch with her snuggly blanket the entire rainy Sunday afternoon as we watched the long dinosaur episode and three others!  The podcast episodes are more for those with longer attention spans.  The lectures and Ark Encounter and Ark Exploration videos are fascinating. 

Well-done science videos help my younglings to remember the subject matter better than simply reading it in a textbook.  Apologia science (our core science) textbooks are amazing because they are bright and have experiments that bring the science to life for the students.  Adding videos as supplements to our coursework aids in bringing the words off the page and into “real life;” we are a visual people.  We like to touch, taste, see, and feel the world around us.  If you can’t physically see the Grand Canyon with your own eyes, it certainly helps to be able to watch a video showing it.  The tools available to my children far exceed those I had access to 35 years ago.  I still default on books, but I am totally willing to include new tools to help them answer tough questions in any subject. 

Check out the Ark Encounter website or look up “Answers in Genesis” on YouTube.  You will be amazed at the wealth of scholastic information in their videos.  Second best to sitting in the actual lecture hall (actually, Louis thinks it’s better because we can pause it, pull out books, and do our own discussion and additional research as they talk). 

I’ll type later about our super history supplements (also free from YouTube!) we’ve discovered.

Growing Little Love

Growing Little Love

Thea is getting independent by giant leaps.  I don’t do the whole months thing unless I have to (I love math, but “over one” is just as good as “fourteen point two five months” as far as describing my baby’s age goes) so when people ask, she’s one.

Lucas gets a new bike, and Thea has to try it!

Lucas gets a water balloon maker (thank you, Grandma! The grenades have shredded latex shrapnel all over the yard – so Thea likes to clean all the pieces up)… and Thea is right alongside them filling up balloons.

At the beach she’s looking for shells with Becky and running into the surf with Lucas – not as far as Lucas, at least she still got a healthy fear of the deep!

Building a cage?  Oh yes, Thea is right there trying to screw in the wood… well, Mommy and Lucas were using this tool on the wood: Thea just hasn’t figured out screwdrivers drive screws!

Grandma brought a pool – “Mommy!” Thea wants it set up so she can splash!

Daddy gets stakes for the garden… Thea is helping him drag them to the right spot!

Thea loves her shoes (Thank you, Jesus! Finally a child who wants her feet covered outside!) and will bring them to her bigger siblings since she can only get her feet partway in and she knows that isn’t proper. …and reading – she loves anything Becky is reading. (Actually, anything Becky is doing!)

I love watching them grow.  I drove Christina and a friend to another friend’s graduation and his mom mentioned how much Thea has grown.  I can already see her at 16 and graduating in a year like her eldest sister… time flies.  Enjoy every minute with them! 

Life has taught me, fortunately at a young age, that we are not promised tomorrow.  The byproduct is that I am frank, honest, and don’t hide my care and concern for those I love.  I try to remember that each time I speak to someone may be the last – I have lost many people and none of my losses are plagued with regret at the last words spoken.  I pray that I keep love first.

I watch my younglings grow and I continually pray that I am guided to teach them how to live without regrets.  To love honestly, to speak in that love, to always stand for truth, to live life taking risks so as never to say, “I regret…” wistfully thinking of some word or action they wanted to do but decided against.  I pray they guard their hearts from evil and think on positive things.

I watch Thea grow, as I’ve watched each of the others and my younger siblings, I smile at her growing independence and blooming personality.  I am so thankful and humbled that God blessed us with the honor of raising our children and leading each of them toward their own way. Our time with them is short. Enjoy every moment.

Crafting Cages

Crafting Cages

Last month we built two big mobile cages for our livestock

One is for the “teenager” chickens (those between just feathered and adult, about 6 weeks to 24 weeks).  Rebeccah bought the clearance Buff Orpington straight run (mixed males and females) from Tractor Supply at the end of their chick days and they are now a little over 12 weeks old – time for selling the males before we eat them at 24 weeks!

The other was for Rebeccah, Kimberly, and Christina’s newest project: Guinea Pigs.  They had one named Jack, who, just like his namesake, was adept at getting out of cages (starting with a two-day excursion on the day she brought him home!).  On one of his excursions, he decided to disappear into the wild for good (I think he’d heard some Wild Kratts: free and in the wild!).

Shop day had us designing and building the cages.  They are night-time predator proof and easy to move.  We discovered that Guinea Pigs are a perfect lawn mower: one day and they graze the grass to ½ inch height.  (Formula = 3 adult pigs to 32 square feet of grass.)

The girls learned and practiced using power tools, critical thinking (this looked good on paper, but in reality it will cause this problem, how can we fix it?), planning, budgeting (looking prices up online and estimating our actual cost before we went), and applying this knowledge in a practical way to create a final product.  We painted the walls to help keep them from rotting, but Rebeccah, who is never satisfied with leaving something plain and functional, turned them into a work of bi-colored art.  (I only had white, so she had to mix dyes to get another color!)

Although this was a “day off” from school, the girls learned and used various practical skills and developed two products for our family livestock.  They had a blast!  They learned a lot.  They had a very successful and memorable day creating and a huge surge of pride when they look out there now – something they made is being used everyday by cute little animals!

Chore Candy

Chore Candy

 We have a neat little system with a chore chart on the refrigerator and set amounts for specific chores completed.  This has worked well for about twelve years.  When a job is done, Mom or Dad (or big sister) checks it and puts the amount on the chart under the helper’s name. On Saturday, if all school work is completed, we would add up the amounts and “take money” off the chart.  They would then decide if they wanted it in their savings account or to spend. *(the picture was taken after Rebeccah and Kimberly pulled all their extra money off to buy guppies)

Then on one fun day at Betty Griffin Thrift looking for a bookcase, we discovered a Candy Machine.  You know; the kind you stick coins in and get candy or nuts.  It was bright powder blue and Christina says “Mom!  This would solve the candy problem and help motivate us for chores!”  (This is coming from my teenager – “candy problem” was that I don’t buy candy.)

It worked and was five bucks.  Yes.  I bought it.  We made the “candy machine rules.”

#1: you must ask mom first, two coins a day is enough candy

#2: whatever money is in the machine after the candy is gone will be used to buy the next batch of candy/nuts

#3: mom has to approve said candy/nuts

#4: disobeying rules means candy machine gets donated right back

Then this started happening: I’d hear, “I’m done with school, I did xyz, may I take 25 cents off my chart for candy?” Or they’d see nothing on the chart under their name and want to know what chores needed doing.  (Motivational tool, check)

The girls raised $6 and change in their first “batch” ($1 worth of jelly beans).  They bought more candy and set their own additional rules which they have been following for the last three weeks.  They added:

#5: money comes off the chart in quarters only when being used for the machine

#6: excess money “made” off the candy machine goes into a savings envelope

#7: each girl gets to pick a candy/nut and mix it together each time they reload

#8: (appears to apply to the three oldest only) if you take money off for candy, you have to put the same amount in your savings account

Now they have “raised” about $25 in a little over a month and asked me to help them print a chart so they can keep it in the envelope with their “candy machine” savings money to track their big goal progress.  I asked what the “big goal” was – all I was told in reply was “at this rate, it will take three years.”

They discovered that if they load dark chocolate into the machine, Daddy uses it too!  So with each new batch, they’ve been sure to add dark chocolate almonds or dove bites (that mix went fast and I’m sure Daddy was probably their #1 customer – he was always asking “do you have a quarter?”)

They turned the “chore motivation” tool into a “saving for a big goal” tool!
